In April of 2019, Centergy convened the Opportunity Zone Communities Summit for central Wisconsin. The conclave included representatives from each of the nine sectors in the Centergy Region that are designated as qualifying for this federal incentive program.Opportunity Zones are a national community investment tool that connects private capital with low-income communities across America. The nine “zones” in central Wisconsin are: Merrill, Wausau (2), Stevens Point (2), Marshfield, Wisconsin Rapids, Port Edwards, and Nekoosa.
The meeting included presentations by representatives from each of the communities, an overview of the Opportunity Zone Program by Vandewalle & Associates, and presentations by the Wisconsin Housing Economic Development Authority, and the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation.
The group discussed potential regional strategies to promote Opportunity Zones, the preparing of a regional Opportunity Zones prospectus, creating a regional clearinghouse of developers, identifying regional investors and creating regional Opportunity Funds. A regional Opportunity Zone meeting for investors is planned for July.
